Patriot High School Band and Colorguard

                                 Prospective Students

Are you interested in joining the Patriot Band, Colorguard, or Drumline?

If you are a current student at Patriot then you should come talk to Mr. Moreno.  Students involved in the program must take a band, colorguard, or percussion class AND be enrolled in 7th period marching band. We also ask that students have a good attitude and be able to balance academics with after school rehearsals and performances.

If you are currently an 8th grader and you're interested in playing next year, then keep practicing and make sure to attend the MAY 3RD 2012 PARENT/STUDENT Information Meeting. This meeting is mandatory for anyone wishing to participate in the fall of 2012.

Below are some of the most asked questions that new students and their parents have.  If you have a question that isn't answered on this page then please contact Mr. Moreno at pcrband@gmail.com or at (951)361-6551.

What is the Cardinal Regiment?

The Cardinal Regiment is the name for the fall marching band.  It is made up of the band, drumline, and colorguard.  Everyone in the program falls under the name “Cardinal Regiment”.

What classes does my student need to register for?

All students register for two classes.

Woodwind and brass players register for concert band and marching band

Percussion players register for percussion ensemble and marching band

Colorguard members register for colorguard and marching band.

The reason for the two classes is so students will receive credit for the after school practices that we have.

Does my student need to register for marching band?

Yes, marching band gives students credit for all of the after school practices we have and it also holds them accountable for showing up to rehearsal.

Does my student get PE credit for marching band?

Yes, students will get 1 semester of exemption from PE for every 1 year of marching band they take.  If students are in marching band for four years AND they pass the state physical fitness test, then they won’t have to take PE which frees up their schedule for other electives.

How much time is involved in being in the program?  Can my students do sports and band?

In the fall the group rehearses about 3 days a week (Monday nights, Thursday after school, and Wednesday after school). The program at Patriot is recognized throughout the state for its excellence and awe-inspiring performances.  In order to attain these standards we ask that students be committed to the program and attend all rehearsals and performances.  Unfortunately our rehearsal and performance schedule doesn’t leave room for many other extra-curricular activities.

Can my student do AVID and band?

Yes, but also know that the basic idea of AVID is to prepare students for college and to teach them the skills they need to succeed after high school.  Band prepares students for college and gives them the skills they need to succeed in both high school and beyond.  95% of the students in our program have at least a 2.0 and most of our students have at least a 3.0.   We have also had many students finish in the top 10 of their class consistently every year. Our program emphasizes hard work, discipline, dedication, and time-management.  Students also have 1 day a week of classtime devoted to studying and doing homework.

Is there a fee to be in the band, colorguard, and drumline program?

There is no required fee.  But our program does need funds in order to operate so we ask students to voluntarily fundraise and donate to the program so that we may be able to do after school rehearsals and competitions. The quality of the program and the amount of practices and performances we do will depend on the the students and parents ability to successfully fund raise and donate what we need to operate.  This will be discussed further at the May parent meeting. Students will NEVER be turned away for lack of being able to pay but we do encourage all students to help the programs finances by seeking donations as well as participating in fundraisers.

Can parents volunteer?

Yes!  Parents are encouraged and expected to help out with the program.  We have several fundraisers every year where all parents/guardians are expected to work a shift.  Parents seeking a larger role in the program can also get elected into our Booster Board.

The booster board is responsible for many aspects of the program.  A successful band cannot exist without a strong booster board. Booster Board elections will be on May 12th.  Booster board positions are President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary.  Other non board positions include SCRIP representative, hospitality (food), transportation (of equipment), maintenance (of equipment), photographer, videographer, as well as chairpersons for several events throughout the year. We encourage all Freshmen parents to consider helping out and taking on a role on the Booster Board.

What meetings do I need to attend?

ALL students must have a parent/guardian in attendance at the May 3rd  Parent Meeting in the Patriot Band Room (located on the north side of campus, next to the theatre in the C Building.  At this meeting all aspects of the program will be discussed and questions answered.  This meeting is very important and will answer you and your students questions.

When do rehearsals start for next year?

Rehearsals will begin in June and will be once a week until band camp.

Band Camp will be the last week of July and first week of August.  Please do not schedule family vacxations during these two weeks.  Students missing these two weeks may not get a spot in the fall field show.

Does my student have to attend Summer rehearsals?

All students must attend "Summer Band" for band, drumline, and colorguard members.  The summer band program is very important to attend in order for all students to learn the basics and fundamentals of music, body movement, marching, and everything else we do during the year. Students who don't attend the summer band program will not be guaranteed a spot in the 2012 Patriot Band, Colorguard, and Drumline.

Overall, the program at Patriot is a lot of fun.  As a member you will go to many new places and meet new people.  It is a lot of work but worth it.  Students in our program learn about hard work, time management, discipline, respect,  and honor.  Many of them are also at the top of their class academically.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
